On this small group course of 3 people you will learn to build from scratch either a Concert Classical or Flamenco guitar using a combination of traditional methods, hand tools and machine tools.
You will design and put together a traditional Spanish rosette, with a central mosaic and other motifs using natural and dyed veneers. Thickness and voice the guitar top, install the rosette and produce all the other components neck, fretboard, guitar back and bridge. Finally assemble all the components in the solera mould.
Over the 4 weeks the course lasts, you will also learn about other aspects of the build process such as sharpening and maintaing tools and machinery, the making and use of radiusing dishes, moulds and the solera, as well as other aspects of the Spanish guitar method of construction.
The day is divided up into a morning session and an afternoon session both of 4 hours duration, with a 2 hour break for lunch. Saturdays is a half day and Sundays is free.
The students have access to the workshop outside of the course hours to advance with simple tasks like sanding and using handtools.
The guitar will be completed in week 4 in the white(with no finish)but depending on timing etc you may get to give the instrument some sealing coats with shellac. The finishing process of the guitar is beyond the scope of this course, traditional French polish is a long process, however if you wish to learn how to do this we can arrange to extend your stay with us after the course has finished to learn the French Polish technique.
At the end of the course we will have a small concert and handing over certificates to the participants.
